Hint to new Manta?

Opel Experimental indicates new direction Opel

Just used to the design sauce that Opel has been pouring over its models for several years? Then wet your chest. In September, Opel will present a concept car that indicates the direction the brand will take with its models in the coming years.

IAA Mobility in Munich will be the stage on which Opel will present the Experimental in September. The Opel Experimental is a study model that, according to the manufacturer, paints a picture of what you can expect in the coming years. The Experimental is not just a preview of a new model, but according to the Germans, it reflects ‘the brand’s vision of the future’. For example, according to CEO Florian Huettl, the Opel Experimental “symbolizes what we want to achieve with Opel”.

We do not expect a completely new design direction. According to Opel, the design of the Experimental represents an evolution of the current design philosophy called Bold and Pure. That current design language debuted in 2018 on a study model that also had ‘Experimental’ in its name: the Opel GT X Experimental. That too was not the first conceptual Opel that saw the light of day as an ‘Experimental’. For example, in 1965 the Germans conjured up the Experimental GT from the top hat during the IAA, a preview of the Opel GT that came on the market a few years later.

We aim for the Opel Experimental – incidentally the first creation to display the recently revised logo – hinting at a new model. After all, the aforementioned GT X Experimental not only looked ahead to a new design, but also to a new model. The Opel Mokka is clearly inspired by that study model. We know that Opel wants to revive the Manta. So don’t be surprised if the Experimental looks ahead to this in a sense. Undoubtedly, the show car is fully electric. After all, Opel announced two years ago that it will only sell new electric cars from 2028.
