Due to its age and rarity, the last Opel Rekord has already become a true enthusiast’s car. Yet every now and then a copy pops up that makes you wonder how it ever survived until 2021. That does not apply to this one, because this one looks like a very neat copy.

Sometimes there are those cars that can take you all the way back to a bygone era. At least we can say that about this Opel Rekord E from 1981. Everything about the car breathes the era from which it comes. That starts with the model itself. After all, the Rekord was the predecessor of the Omega and with the end of the Omega, Opel’s presence in the upper middle class also came to an end. The Rekord does not actually have a modern descendant, although you could still consider the sturdy Insignia as such with a little good will. In addition, the color of this example also fits perfectly with the time it was new, not to mention the bright red upholstery of the seats. It is also a pre-facelift Rekord E, including the chrome bumpers. Although you were the gentleman with a Rekord in the driveway, there are wonderfully modest steel wheels underneath, which, like the rest of the car, seem to have stayed out of the rust devil’s clutches.

That is already a good reason to give this Rekord 2.0 S a big thumbs up. After all, rust was a common problem and it was not uncommon for the ‘samples’ to fall prey to this. It’s hard to say whether the rest of the car is still that sleek, but based on the photos we’re presented with, it looks like a very sleek thing. What further argues for this 40-year-old Opel is that it has only had two owners. The first owner sold it in 2004, so 23 years after the Rekord was delivered new at Autobedrijf van der Boon in Leimuiden. After that, the car remained with its second owner for 17 years.

According to the provider, the maintenance history is available and that can’t hurt for several reasons. Among other things, to gain insight into the mileage. The stated position is 94,407 km, but the Rekord has a counter with only five digits. So there may be a barrel (or two) more. However, given the state, that does not immediately appear to be the case. The fact that there are still all kinds of old paperwork and even a parking disc from days gone by in the car is a favorable sign in our view. There is a good chance that the documentation is in order.

We can well imagine that some people’s mouths are already watering and the biggest question is what this nice Rekord should cost. Well, that is relatively not that bad: €3,950 is the asking price. Perhaps a lot of money for such an old Opel, but something tells us that it is worth it in such a condition.
