Opera GX is a browser purely for gamers

The browser Opera is not that well known. Wrongly, because the makers often release functions that you will also find in other browsers afterwards. Some time ago they put an edition on the market that should provide a more intense ‘Gaming eXperience’: Opera GX.

  • Pros
  • Based on a decent browser Opera
  • Lots of information about gaming
  • Throttling of various system resources
  • Negatives
  • (Too) bright color themes
  • Limited utility

It seems a bit strange: a browser aimed at gamers. But whoever thought that the intention is to game with this browser, is wrong. The real goal is twofold: on the one hand to provide the gamer with current and useful game information, on the other hand to limit the system resources of the browser in order to give more power to your games. With some good will you can even discern a third goal: to get users into their ‘game vibe’ faster.

Atmosphere and information

The latter tries to achieve the browser by letting you choose from a dozen glitzy themes, with LED colors and wallpapers that look like they’re straight out of a game. You can even have the browser play background music to the beat of your browsing activities. In short, you immediately get in the mood to play a game.

But the ‘GX’ stands for more. From a special ‘GX Corner’ you get all kinds of current information, including a release calendar for games, both for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Mac, VR and Stadia (mobile games and Nintendo Switch are not yet available).

Keep in mind that promotional messages pop up from time to time. You also decide which social media and game channels you want to call up in a separate window at the push of a button. This ranges from Facebook Messenger and Twitter to Discord, CryptoWallet and Twitch.

Set your own (color) theme, mode and background.

Pinch off

A second part of this game browser (called GX Control) focuses on freeing up system resources when you want to keep Opera GX open while gaming.

You can use a slider or a drop-down menu to indicate how much RAM, CPU and network bandwidth you want the browser to use, so that you can be sure that the system resources used do not stand in the way of an optimal gaming experience. It remains to be seen, of course, to what extent this will make a noticeable difference.

Conclusion

Opera GX is completely based on the Opera browser and that is meant as a compliment. The target audience: avid gamers who also want to keep using their browser while gaming.
