Apple is working hard on glasses for augmented reality. These glasses could be the last Apple product you buy.
Are the Apple glasses the ultimate goal?
Over the past month, we paid extra attention to Apple’s plans for virtual reality and augmented reality on iPhone. The plans for augmented reality are particularly fascinating. With every announcement we already see ourselves walking around with small glasses, while the world around us is expanded with digital elements.
The weather is put in the air, the route indicated on the ground via arrows and e-mails fly by and wave you away again. The possibilities are endless. To such an extent that these glasses can eventually completely replace the iPhone and other Apple products.
That will not immediately take off. First Apple comes with glasses for virtual reality and later for augmented reality. Given the current developments around this technology, we should probably not expect too much from the first generation of augmented reality glasses. Think of it as an extension of your iPhone just like the Apple Watch. It will be another way of presenting the information from your iPhone.

iPhone no longer needed
But if those glasses are further developed, become smaller and can present information better and more beautifully, Apple’s ar glasses could become so important in a few generations that the iPhone is no longer needed.
At the moment we are still buying various separate products from Apple. You have an iPhone as your daily portal to the rest of the world and possibly an Apple Watch as an extension of that iPhone. You may be working on an iMac or MacBook and also using an iPad. The following year a new model will be released, which you also want to buy.
But why hold a physical iPhone in your hand, when your glasses can render it for you? A new design of the iPhone can then simply be sent to the glasses as an update.
Probably the glasses will not literally place an iPhone in your hand, but everything you do with an iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac or iPad could very well be solved via augmented reality. Without the need for additional devices.
Hooks and eyes
Of course there are some snags. For example, augmented reality on your glasses can only be seen by you and screens are often shared with others. There are also countless functions of Apple devices that cannot be taken over by glasses just like that.
Also, don’t forget that it’s a lot more lucrative for Apple to sell us a stack of new products every year than to focus on one product.
But what is clear is that Apple’s augmented reality glasses are potentially the most important new product since the iPhone. Dreaming and speculating about that is surely the best thing there is.
