Oppo Enco X – Oppo’s AirPods Pro

Oppo Enco X

Of course, Oppo cannot lag behind when it comes to wireless in-ears. The bluetooth earbuds look like Apple’s AirPods Pro, and also offer noise cancellation. However, the difference in price is big. You can read whether they are the best earphones in this Oppo Enco X review.

Partly thanks to smartphone makers, a market has emerged for wireless in-ears, with Apple taking the lead with its AirPods. Both audio and smartphone manufacturers are now trying to take a piece of the lucrative market. It is therefore not surprising that Oppo also offers its bluetooth earphones, especially since sister brand OnePlus is already making an attempt with (among other things) the affordable OnePlus Buds. Unfortunately for the time being without success, the earphones are of poor quality and the design was so copied from Apple’s AirPods that American customs intercepted them in error. Although Oppo’s Enco X earphones in turn have copied quite a bit from the AirPods Pro and are a bit more expensive than the earphones from OnePlus, the Enco X in-ears are certainly worthwhile in terms of quality.

Although the Enco X earbuds look a lot like the AirPods Pro, they are opposites in a different way. Where the AirPods work best in conjunction with an iPhone or iPad, the Enco X works optimally with Android smartphones, regardless of whether it is from Oppo or not. That’s because the associated HeyMelody app is currently only available for Android. With this app you can update the firmware and configure the tap control of the earbuds.

However, you cannot find an equalizer in the app. That’s a bit crazy. For the sound adjustment you have to go to Oppo, which has again teamed up with a Danish audio brand: Dynaudio.

Oppo Enco X in practice

This collaboration with Dynaudio will offer its marketing advantages. This way, Oppo can still show off an audio brand. Although the parts simply roll from Oppo’s Chinese factory, of course. Dynaudio in turn has adjusted the sound quality in a balanced way. Mid and high tones come out well and the details are acceptable. The bass sound unfortunately lags a bit.

The earphones are suitable for all purposes: when watching video or listening to audiobooks and podcasts. The ears are also very suitable for music, but the musical purist or bass lover will be less enthusiastic about the Oppo Enco X ears.

So there are many players in the new market of wireless in-ears and Oppo must also stand out to get its place. Many Chinese manufacturers do this by lowering the price. Oppo wants to position itself as a more luxurious brand and is taking a different tack: noise suppression. You can adjust this on several levels: for example, you have regular noise suppression so that you can concentrate better on the music, podcast or audiobook. But also strong noise reduction if you are in noisy environments, such as a busy room or on the train. Suppress all ambient noise? Unfortunately that does not work, for that you are better off with more expensive Bose or Sennheiser earphones or (even better) over-ear headphones. There is also a transparent mode that does allow ambient noise to pass through. Handy if you still have to keep your attention, for example in traffic.

Speaking of noise cancellation: the built-in microphones provide a fairly clear conversation sound, when you, for example, have a telephone call with the earphones in.

Battery life

How long the earphones last on a battery charge depends of course on the volume and whether the noise cancellation is on. If you have everything turned off, the ears will last about 4.5 to 5 hours. When the noise reduction is on, it is an hour less. That is not exceptionally long, but not unusually short for wireless in-ears.

The charging case has enough power to charge both earbuds about six times. You can then recharge the box itself via the USB-C port or wireless charger.

Despite the fact that the Oppo earphones do not stand out above the crowd in terms of sound quality, battery life and design, I do prefer them to in-ears in the same price range such as the AirPods, Jabra Elite or Sony earphones. This has one very good reason: the wearing comfort. The ears are so light that you hardly notice that you are wearing them. Moreover, they stay in place. Because the ears are equipped with interchangeable rubber tips, you can adjust them to size and they close the ear canal well. This also benefits the sound and the operation of the noise cancellation. In practice, you can wear the earphones when working behind the PC, but you can also run with them. Regardless of the weather, because the Oppo Enco X is splash-proof.

The Oppo Enco X ears stand out especially in terms of wearing comfort. Whether you exercise, travel or work behind your laptop

Alternatives to the Oppo Enco X

As I wrote, there are many alternatives to the Oppo Enco X. The AirPods Pro do have better sound quality, but are not that suitable for Androids and the price tag is a lot higher. The Sony WF-1000XM3 has somewhat better noise reduction, but cannot match the wearing comfort. Samsung’s Galaxy Buds + have a better battery life and are also extremely comfortable … But just not as pleasant as the Enco X.

Conclusion: Buy Oppo Enco X?

The Oppo Enco X ears stand out especially in terms of wearing comfort. Whether you exercise, travel or work behind your laptop. You don’t notice that you have the earbuds in, and you don’t have to worry about them falling out. In terms of sound experience, it could all have been a bit more intense and detailed. Nevertheless, the Oppo Enco X are simply good bluetooth in-ears.
