OPPO has plans to release its own processor for phones, according to leaked information. The intention is that the chipsets will be used in the company’s smartphones and possibly also in OnePlus devices. OPPO will design the chipset entirely in-house.
OPPO chipsets
OPPO is working on a first chipset for phones, according to information from the Chinese ITHome† OPPO is thus walking in the shoes of many competitors. OPPO wants to keep all aspects involved in the design and integration of such a chipset in their own hands. In addition, the company will use the 6 nm firing process of the Taiwanese chip maker TSMC. Later on, the company will also work with a more modern 4 nm process.
More and more phone manufacturers seem to be focusing on designing their own chipsets. Samsung has been making its Exynos processors for some time, which it also offers to other manufacturers. Furthermore, Huawei has its Kirin processors and Google last year with its Tensor processor that enabled custom functions in the field of artificial intelligence. A chipset that has been custom-made in-house can therefore also bring benefits for OPPO in terms of software.
It must be said that chip design is not entirely new to the company either. Just this year, the brand released its own neural processing unit (NPU) for the OPPO Find X5 series: the MariSilicon X. With that chip, the company has managed to boost the image processing of its phones, although there is still room for improvement. You can read that in the review of the OPPO Find X5 Pro.
