We have a new smartphone manufacturer! With the arrival of the OSOM OV1, the brand ‘OSOM’ is launching their first smartphone on the market. According to the company, it should be a privacy-friendly device.
Remote control as a smartphone?
OSOM comes from Canada and was founded by former employees of the American company Essential. This manufacturer released a smartphone on the market in 2017 with a first. It was the first smartphone with a notch (cutout) in the screen. Essential started in 2015, but unfortunately did not last long. In 2017, the company decided, probably for financial reasons, to stop again.
This was actually quite a shame, because the company was working on a remarkable project. Project Gem, as the project was called, had to bring a smartphone to the market with a remarkably long design. So long that the device looked more like a remote control. And with this, this (never officially published) smartphone immediately fell into the ‘super cool, very nice, but nobody is waiting for it’ list.
Fresh start with a new phone
However, the new company OSOM is going to bring a ‘normal’ smartphone on the market. We don’t know much about the smartphone yet, but what we can see from the images that OSOM placed is that the device will probably come on the market in two colors, white and black. We also see two cameras on the back of the phone. Presumably a primary main camera and a wide-angle camera. In addition, we see a flash and a fingerprint scanner. The cameras and flash are in a camera island, which looks suspiciously like the Fairphone 4.
Privacy and availability
To better protect the phone and better guarantee your privacy, the manufacturer has developed special software. In an interview held with Android Police, says one of the founders: “It (the software) is all part of the same strategy to bring control back to customers.” What else is meant by it and what else the company plans to do has just been announced.
The device should be launched in the summer of 2022 for the American and Canadian markets. Later, the smartphone should also be available in European countries. It is not yet known whether we can expect this smartphone in the Netherlands. OSOM also says it will provide more information about the OSOM OV1 in February.
