Pay close attention when using Gemini Photos photo remover app

Gemini Photos promises to clean up your photos through machine learning. Duplicate photos, screenshots and images with text will be removed for you. Does that work?

Clean up your photos with Gemini Photos

You store countless images on your iPhone. You shoot several similar photos to eventually post the best ones on social media, take screenshots and save photos of texts. Cleaning up all these images is actually too much of a hassle. They will go down once so that you no longer suffer from it. However, this will make your Camera Roll a mess and it can be difficult to find old images again. Your library also takes up too much space. The new Gemini Photos app comes to the rescue.

The maker behind the app, MacPaw, was previously active with clean-up programs for the Mac. Gemini Photos is the company’s first iOS app that scans and cleans your photos.

If you start the app, you must of course first give access to your photos. This is necessary to scan them. Gemini Photos promises that your images will only be analyzed locally and not uploaded to another location. If you press ‘OK’, your photos will not be deleted immediately.

Pay attention!

The app scans in two ways. First of all, similar photos are selected. These are very similar photos and the app will choose the best one. Before deleting the rest of the photos, you can scroll through them to see if you agree. Chances are that the app wants to delete photos that you may not want to lose. So pay attention. The app often chooses photos that show the same object, but are otherwise clearly very different.

Safer are the photos that the app calls ‘Junk’. Here you will be presented with blurry photos, notes and screenshots. For blurry photos, the app chooses images with a lower resolution and poor lighting. In ‘Notes’ you will mainly find photos of text documents. Screenshots speak for themselves. Those are screenshots that you have taken of your screen. Just look around before you hit the delete button.

Everything gone

Another thing to be careful with is that the app has a button in the settings menu to delete your entire photo library. If you press this, you must first use Touch ID to confirm the action. Still, it’s an exciting idea that the app is just two taps away from throwing away all your captured photos and videos. So be warned.

Subscription

You can only use Gemini Photos through a subscription. Such a subscription costs 1.99 euros per month or 11.49 euros per year. You can test the app through a free trial period. This trial only lasts three days and is automatically transferred to a paid subscription. You must therefore actively cancel this if you do not like the app. This must be done 24 hours before the subscription starts.

You do not have to be in the app itself to cancel the subscription. To cancel, go to the App Store and tap your account at the top right. There you tap on your name and then choose ‘Subscriptions’. Then choose ‘Cancel trial subscription’. So you can choose to clean up your photos once and then immediately cancel your subscription. By paying you keep your film roll constantly clean. That can be worthwhile if you like a tidy Film Roll and don’t want to spend too much time on it.
