Residents of the European Union will probably start paying for the greenhouse gases they emit as early as 2027. The European Parliament and the EU countries have reached an agreement on a package of measures with which the so-called climate goals can be achieved. Part of the climate goals is the reduction of CO2 emissions. It must be reduced by 55 percent before 2030 and the EU wants to be completely ‘climate neutral’ by 2050.
In order to reduce CO2 emissions in the European Union, the current CO2 certificate system will be made much stricter. Companies already pay in the form of permits or certificates for a certain permitted amount of greenhouse gases that they are allowed to emit. Each year, the European Union determines how many of these CO2 certificates will be issued, with the aim of encouraging companies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Non-European companies that want to sell in the European Union will now also pay ‘at the border’ for their emissions.
The average citizen of the European Union, and therefore of the Netherlands, will also pay for his or her CO2 emissions. For example, via energy companies and filling stations that have to pay for their emission rights and that pass on rising costs to the customer. Will we soon be paying even higher amounts at the pump? NOS reports that it would be a maximum of €0.10 per refueling.
The member states still have to formally approve the plan.
