Petrol price again slightly down

Petrol and diesel became slightly cheaper at Dutch filling stations last weekend, after prices had already fallen slightly on Friday. This is evident from figures from consumer collective UnitedConsumers. The price falls are a welcome change from the sharp price rises of recent times.

At the time of writing, the average national suggested retail price of a liter of Euro 95 (E10) is €2,462. That is about 3 euro cents less than Friday, when a liter of Euro 95 still cost €2.49. While the liter price of diesel continued to rise on Friday, it also fell last weekend. On Friday, diesel still cost €2.38 per liter, at the time of writing that is €2.343. This means that the average national recommended retail price of diesel has fallen slightly more than that of petrol. With LPG, the price remains relatively constant. Its GLA stood at €1.32 last Friday and has barely or not fallen at all.

UnitedConsumers calculates the average national suggested retail price based on the suggested retail prices of the five major oil companies. Pump owners can deviate from the suggested retail prices of Shell, BP, Total, Texaco and Esso, which UnitedConsumers have been tracking since the beginning of this century. In practice, motorists only pay the suggested retail prices along the highway.

The fuel price has risen sharply in recent weeks due to the uncertain situation surrounding the war in Ukraine. In an effort to curb prices, the cabinet announced a cut in excise duties on fuels on Friday. At the moment, a fixed amount of about 83 cents is charged per liter of petrol and 53 cents for diesel. Per liter of petrol, 17 cents will be deducted from this excise duty from 1 April, while the price reduction for diesel is less drastic by 11 cents. In the long run, this could mean that diesel becomes more expensive than petrol in certain places.
