Petrol price sky high! Now you pay more than 100 euros per tank even in these economical cars

It’s not a party at the pump. And the situation is getting sadder. The suggested retail price of a liter of petrol has risen again and is at 2.16 euros at the time of writing. That means that even in ordinary, fuel-efficient cars like this you pay more than 100 euros per fill-up. Oof! That almost physically hurts.

In October 2021, the petrol price in the Netherlands passed the EUR 2.00 limit for the first time in history. Now, more than four months later, the 2.20 euro is in sight. This is partly due to the rapid recovery of the global economy after the corona crisis in 2020. High oil prices – partly as a result of the unrest between Russia and Ukraine – also play a role. A barrel of oil now costs about 93 euros. Strangely enough, that price was even higher between 2011 and 2014, at 100 euros, but the price of petrol then remained at 1.87 euros.

Not only is gasoline shockingly expensive, but so is diesel. At the beginning of October, a liter still cost 1.69 euros, now that has risen to 1.85 euros. The recommended retail price for LPG is currently 1,114 euros. Incidentally, there are more than enough gas stations in the Netherlands where you pay less than the recommended retail price for petrol, diesel or LPG, so shopping pays off. But if you ‘forced’ to fill your tank along the highway with E10 worth 2.16 euros per litre, then you are even in these cars above a total price of 100 euros for a refueling.

Renault Captur TCe 90

The entry-level version of the Renault Captur, with a 999 cc three-cylinder petrol beetle on board, does not save you from a peppery bill at the pump. Because the 90 hp compact crossover has a 48 liter tank, filling it up completely costs you no less than 103.68 euros. If you are such a twink that you empty the Captur to the last drop, in any case.

Volvo XC40 Recharge Plug-in Hybrid

Do you have the plug-in hybrid version of the Volvo XC40? Then 48 liters go into the fuel tank and you have to pay for the words ‘fill it up’ with a bill of 103.68 euros. The nice thing is that you can walk back to your car with a wonderfully mean smile on your face. Because that person at the pump next to you drives a Volvo XC40 T2 with a 54 liter tank. He must therefore cough up 116.64 euros.

Seat Tarraco PHEV

Okay, with a car as big as the Seat Tarraco it is of course not surprising that you pay more for the petrol. Then it is even not so bad with the plug-in hybrid variant, actually. It has a fuel tank of 47 liters and therefore costs 101.52 euros to fill to the brim. So be glad you don’t have a Tarraco with a 1.5 TSI engine, which swallows no less than 58 liters of E10 (125.28 euros).
