Up to more than 200 hp from the original engine
With a Peugeot 205 GTI you stand out like a peacock in a chicken coop these days. The feisty Peugeot still appeals to the imagination of fans of throw-and-throw cars from days gone by, in particular, and the English Tolman Engineering responds to this by modernizing the 205 GTI in a modest way.
The Peugeot 205 GTI is by far the version of the distant 208 ancestor that many car enthusiasts get their hands on. Our own Joas van Wingerden gets naughty feelings in the gut, but there is of course also a large crowd of 205 fanatics outside the AutoWeek editors. The English Tolman Engineering believes that those GTI fans deserve some modern gadgets and delivers a version with contemporary gadgets in the form of the Peugeot 205 GTI Tolman Edition.
The so-called resto mod from Tolman Engineering can be specified entirely according to the customer’s taste. Customers can supply their own 205 GTI, but can also contact Tolman Engineering for a copy from stock. The entire body receives an anti-rust treatment and a ceramic coating. Tolman Engineering gives both 205’s GTI with 1.6 and 1.9 a modified cylinder head if desired. Tolman even DIYs sixteen-valves from the normally always eight-valve GTIs. According to the English company, it can extract powers of more than 200 hp from the four-cylinder and adapting the original engines produces a better result than replacing the eight-valves for the sixteen-valve from the Peugeot 405 Mi16.
Tolman has a new engine management system on the shelves that improves throttle response, among other things, and also offers customers the option of opting for a self-developed stainless steel exhaust system. Those who wish can even get a limited slip differential in their French powerhouse. The English are happy to adjust the manual gearbox of the 205’s GTI for greater shifting pleasure. The lighting all around is also revised. The halogen lighting is being replaced by LED ones. More adjustments? Secure. Special Bilstein dampers, a new rear stabilizer bar, extra powerful brakes and even power steering find their way to the Peugeot 205 GTI Tolman Edition.
The analog clock shop can be replaced by a digital set of instruments on which the old clocks are digitally imitated. The interior can be further decorated with an Alcantara-finished steering wheel, electric windows and a new audio system. Central door locking, a new alarm system, air conditioning and an immobilizer should make life with a 205 GTI in 2022 even more pleasant. According to Tolman Engineering, all adjustments are relatively easy to reverse. Tolman Engineering asks at least a small 64 grand excluding taxes for a modernized 205.
