Picture Windows Pro – Brush pictures

It is often said that photoshopping is quick, but not everyone actually has the Photoshop program. Fortunately, there are affordable, if less powerful, alternatives. Picture Windows Pro is very affordable (because now completely free). The tool contains numerous editing options and shows each operation in a separate preview.

  • Pros
  • Front image for every “transformation”
  • Also powerful functions
  • Negatives
  • What old-fashioned interface
  • Learning curve for more advanced functions

Admittedly, Picture Windows Pro’s interface may look a bit old-fashioned, but don’t let that spoil the fun. The numerous effects and editing options more than compensate for this. The program can handle various image formats (including png, jpg, tif, gif and bmp), both for opening and for exporting.

Intermediate steps

Once you open an image, it will appear in a large window. At the same time, you will see a thumbnail and as you edit this image, thumbnail images will be added. Undoing an edit is no more difficult than selecting a parent thumbnail image. By the way, you can also start “side branches” from the context menu to perform other operations on them. A less successful side branch can be removed quickly.

Picture Windows Pro has about a hundred different operations (called transformations) and each transformation can be controlled from a movable window.

Once you have fine-tuned a certain transformation, you can save it in a profile and quickly load it again, which can save you a lot of time.

Picture Windows Pro is not about editing and effects.

Saving transformation in profiles already indicates that the tool also wants to appeal to the seasoned photographer and so there are still some functions. For example, it is possible to apply transformations to specific parts of a photo using a variety of masks. The approach is not exactly user-friendly, but the extensive tutorial (71 pages) is helpful. It is also handy that you can save your current transformations in the form of scripts, so that you can quickly pick up the thread afterwards.

Operations based on masks are also perfectly possible.

Picture Windows Pro has a somewhat double face. On the one hand, it is easy to operate and you can quickly return to a previous operation via the handy thumbnail images. On the other hand, there are also a number of functions that can be intimidating (partly due to the numerous button bars). Anyone who takes the trouble to fully master the tool can really improve their photos.
