Formula 1 driver Pierre Gasly has been officially confirmed as a driver for the AlphaTauri F1 team for 2021, ending rumors that he may return to Red Bull Racing.
Last year, the Frenchman was promoted from Toro Rosso to Red Bull Racing, but was returned to Red Bull Racing’s sister team halfway through the season. Underperformance as a teammate of Max Verstappen was the basis for this. The 24-year-old then flourished at AlphaTauri, with a win over Monza this year as the highlight. Gasly is clearly in the right place and can therefore go for it again next year with the Italian team.
This also puts an end to the now not very persistent rumor that he may return to Red Bull Racing. His successor, Alexander Albon, is also unable to break any pots next to Verstappen. The biggest chance now is that Red Bull Racing will go for a driver from outside the Red Bull family before 2021. The only alternative is for the team to continue with Albon, but that seems to be less logical by the week. Former Renault F1 driver Nico Hülkenberg is the favorite for the place next to Verstappen, although the name of Sergio Perez (Racing Point) is still mentioned.
