Play video in YouTube app

With the YouTube app, watch the videos from the popular video site on your smartphone or tablet.

If you don’t have the YouTube app yet, you can download ‘mu via the App Store (iPhone/iPad) or Play Store (Android devices). Need help installing the app? Check out the tip ‘Download an app from the App Store’ or the tip ‘Download an app from the Play Store (Android)’.

The video site YouTube offers almost a countless number of videos. There are also channels to make it easier to find interesting videos. On such a channel, videos from one provider or films about a certain subject are grouped together. SeniorWeb, for example, also has its own channel with instructional videos on all kinds of computer topics.

Search for a specific YouTube channel in the app on your smartphone or tablet:

  • Open the YouTube app.
  • Tap the magnifying glass icon in the top right.
  • Type a search term, for example ‘SeniorWeb’.
  • On the keyboard, tap Search or on the magnifying glass icon.
  • On the iPad/iPhone, tap the tab channels. You don’t need to do anything on Android devices.
  • You will now see all channels containing the search term. On Android devices, there are also videos under the channels. Tap the correct channel. For us that is now SeniorWeb Netherlands.

The channel opens.

All videos are collected on a channel. The ‘Videos’ tab provides a long list of all these videos. The most current videos are at the top. On the ‘Playlists’ tab you will find overviews with videos on a specific topic. The channel owner can create these lists and populate them with videos. Tap a video on a playlist or on the Videos tab and it will play immediately.

While the video is playing, you can adjust the settings.

  • Tap the video.
  • Various icons appear over the video. Tap the icon with the three dots in the top right Button Menu.
  • To open the settings:
    • Tap on Quality to adjust the quality in which you watch the video. Tap on the desired quality. If your internet connection is not that good, it may be useful to watch a lower quality video. The video then stutters less.
    • Tap the square icon to adjust the subtitles. On Android devices it says ‘Subtitles’ here and on the iPad/iPhone ‘Off’. Select a subtitle if necessary. For videos from SeniorWeb, choose Dutch – SeniorWeb.

Tip: turn the smartphone to landscape position (horizontal) to make the video full screen. That looks nicer. On tablets, make the video full screen by clicking the ‘Full screen’ icon in the bottom right full screen to tap.
