Polestar 1 to 6: all Polestar models at a glance

Polestar has chosen an unusual tactic when it comes to naming its models. This is not due to the names themselves, because the cars are simply given a number. However, where such a number indicates the positioning of many other brands – a low number is a smaller and cheaper car, a high number a larger and more expensive car – at Polestar the naming is chronological. So: the Polestar 1 is the first car that Polestar ever introduced, the Polestar 6 at the time of writing the last. This makes it difficult to place the models at a glance, so we would like to put them together. For you, but secretly also for ourselves…

Polestar 1 – large, expensive sign – from €158,300 (out of production)

The Polestar 1 appeared in 2019 as the very first model of a brand that was recently separated from Volvo. ‘Polestar’ used to be on fast Volvos, but will now be used for fully electric models in addition to Volvo itself. It is all the more remarkable that this first model, a mobile sign, was not fully electric. It was in fact a Volvo S60 coupe, but with an extra beautifully decorated interior and an extra thick, plug-in hybrid drivetrain. The Polestar 1 was made in a limited edition of 1,500 copies and is the only Polestar that is already out of production.

Polestar 2 – mid-sized Model 3-like – from €51,200

The Polestar 2 appeared on the price list in 2020 and is Polestar’s first ‘mainstream’ model, Polestar’s first EV, and by far the best-known Polestar to date. It is a kind of raised, sedan-like liftback that was initially seen as the perfect competitor for the Tesla Model 3, but there are now more alternatives. The Polestar 2 shares its technical basis with the Volvo XC40 and, like the electric version of that car, went from front to rear-wheel drive during an extensive technical update.

Polestar 3 – the brother of the Volvo EX90 – from €89,900

The Polestar 3 was announced in October 2022, but the first delivery has yet to take place. The Polestar 3 is a technical brother of the Volvo EX90 and also has almost the same dashboard, but is different in design. Where the EX90 is an XC90-like seven-seater, the Polestar is a slicker five-seater.

Polestar 4 – longer and more expensive than the Polestar 2 – from around €65,000

The Polestar 4, like the 3 Polestars, shows a new, definitive design language. This clearly distinguishes both cars from the Polestars 1 and 2 and from Volvos, which Polestar is distancing itself from with this slicker style. The Polestar 4 is considerably longer than the Polestar 2, bringing it close to the Volswagen ID7, Nio ET5 and BMW i4. It also stands less high on the legs than the Polestar 2, but we think we can still detect some crossover tendencies. Special: the Polestar 4 has no rear window. Please note: the Polestar 4 is lower in the range than the Polestar 3, which appeared slightly earlier.

Polestar 5 – the four-door top model – price nbd

The Polestar 5 was seen for the first time earlier this week. Just like the Polestar 4, it is a low four-door without a rear window, but it does look more elongated and is actually much larger than a Polestar 4. How much bigger? We don’t know that yet, because despite those first photos, the Polestar 5 has not yet been officially launched. The Polestar 5 is a low, fast and somewhat sporty four-door. The Audi E-Tron GT and Porsche Taycan quickly appear as possible competitors, although the Polestar seems a bit more spacious and practical. It won’t be because of the speed: Polestar’s top models will be on a new platform specially developed for those cars and will have an 800V on-board network and up to 884 hp of power.

Polestar 6 – the sporty image maker – price nbd

That 884 hp also applies to the Polestar 6. It therefore has some similarities with the 5, but certainly not too many. This is a four-door convertible with the appearance of a big roadster and a very special roof construction. A real special in EV land, and an image maker par excellence. We would like to see it show up next to a car like the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore, if only because that is the only other expensive, fast electric convertible for the time being.

Positioning

If we put the numbers in order of positioning, the list is expected to look like this:

• Polestar 2 (D segment)
• Polestar 4 (D/E segment)
• Polestar 3 (E-segment SUV)
• Polestar 5 (Top class four-door coupe)
• Polestar 1 (Top class coupe, out of production)
• Polestar 6 (This will be the expensive image maker)

Of course, this is an estimate, because a lot is not yet known about the Polestars 4, 5 and 6. Roughly speaking, however, the proportions certainly look like this, although that will of course change when Polestar soon presents the models 7, 8, 9 and who knows what else. Oh well, it keeps us off the streets…
