No separate options, but is that a bad thing?

The Polestar 2 is in the price lists in its new form. The facelifted electric liftback, which was facelifted last month, was thoroughly renewed under the skin and – whichever version you go for – has a considerably larger driving range than before. The entry-level model now travels up to 518 km (WLTP) and costs €51,200. Today we will find out if you are still short of anything after leaving that amount.
Polestar 2 Standard range Single engine, €51,200
Where until recently you could only get the Polestar 2 as a front or four-wheel drive, the facelift introduced rear-wheel drive for the second model of the Swedish-Chinese brand. Although the touch-up session for the looks of the car was nothing more than that, a lot changed under the skin. New batteries, new electric motors and even a new drive layout: the renewed Polestar 2 has it all.
We do not yet know how the car drives now that the power does not go to the front, but to the rear axle. However, you can already order the new Polestar 2, provided you bring €51,200. For that money you get a Standard Range Single Motor with rear-wheel drive, 272 hp and a 69 kWh battery pack. With this, the car sprints to 100 km / h in 6.4 seconds and comes to a maximum of 518 km according to the WLTP cycle. Recharging is possible with up to 135 kW on the fast charger and with up to 11 kW on the AC charger. According to Volvo, it can go from 10 to 80 percent battery charge in 34 minutes at a fast charging station, while it takes at least 7 hours at the AC charger. The Polestar 2 as a Long range Single engine travels more than 100 km on a battery charge and has slightly more power (299 hp), but costs €4,000 extra.
Appearance
Putting together a Polestar 2 is a fairly clear affair after choosing a powertrain. Two option packages, two wheel designs and six colors are available for the rear-wheel drive versions. Five of those colors cost €1,250 extra, the white-grey paint called ‘Magnesium’ shown in the pictures is standard. For the wheels, 19-inch ones are the norm and the 20-inch five-spoke option costs €1,500 extra. It looks good on the car, but does not benefit the range of the Standard range.
For the seat upholstery of a 2-without-surcharge, you can choose from a combination of black fabrics or a combination of gray fabrics. Other options are only available in combination with one of the two option packages: the €5,000 Plus package. The other option package is the Pilot package and costs €3,000 – and that covers all choices for the Polestar 2. If you ignore another color, the 20-inch wheels and the two packages, the price will remain at €51,200 even after choosing an upholstery color.
One of two upholstery choices at no extra cost.
Little to choose from, so much standard?
Such little choice can mean two things: either Polestar urges you to pull out your wallet because there are no separate options, or there is already quite a lot as standard and you can easily keep it at the starting price. The latter is the case in our opinion. That starts with the appearance of the 2: that is more or less the same no matter what you choose. With the four-wheel drive versions you can opt for a Performance pack, but that too only distinguishes itself with larger brakes and 21-inch wheels. In terms of bumper work and LED lighting, the car always looks the same, so you don’t have to pull your wallet for the look.
This applies not only to the outside, but also to the inside. Whichever version you choose, the seats are always the same in shape and the dashboard always carries the same screens. These screens always run on Google software and therefore have Google Maps navigation and Spotify, but can also be connected to Apple phones via Carplay. A wireless phone charger is standard, as is an eight-speaker sound system. A Harman Kardon system is part of the Plus package mentioned.
You can also sit comfortably while driving on partially electrically adjustable and heated front seats and the temperature is automatically regulated by the climate control. You have good visibility thanks to electrically folding, heated and automatically dimming side mirrors and adaptive high beam. A 360-degree camera and parking sensors all around provide assistance when parking.
Before you arrive at your destination, a number of always-on driver assistance systems aim to prevent accidents, including lane keep assist, drowsiness recognition, blind spot sensors and an emergency braking system that also checks for cross traffic when reversing. Adaptive cruise control is not included, regular cruise control is.
Which parts of the packages would we miss?
In short: in terms of appearance, comfort and safety, the slip-on is also more than a mustache. So what’s in the said packages that you might quickly miss? Well; adaptive cruise control is – especially in traffic – very nice. We also only find keyless entry, an electric tailgate, a heat pump and autonomous driving options after ticking extra boxes. We see the rest of the things that this produces, such as a panoramic roof and even more speakers, as real extras. Or do you think they can’t be missed?
Also in basic trim a sleek appearance.
