Polestar will come after the 1 and the 2 with a new model: the 3. Very little is known about the last model in the series of numbers, but the car under the canvas already shows somewhat which way Polestar wants to walk later.
The Polestar 3 will be an “aerodynamic electric performance SUV” according to the brand. That designation indicates that the model will be a size larger than the Polestar 2, which passes for a crossover. The canvas in the image hides much of the final design, but fortunately not everything. The roofline is already clearly visible. Towards the back it slopes down a bit, but not as strongly as with the 2. At the rear, the roofline is cut off abruptly, leaving the rear window upright. Furthermore, it looks like the roof ‘floats’ above the rest of the body with the C and D-pillars. The window line slopes towards the rear towards the roof, somewhat similar to the Volvo C40.
Incidentally, the Polestar 3 has very little in common with that electric Volvo. The new model gets the Android Automotive operating system on board, but that’s where the similarities end. The Polestar 3 will be the first electric model on a new platform from Volvo. This is most likely the SPA2 platform, which succeeds the current SPA basis of the S60, S90, XC60 and XC90, among others. Whether this concerns a completely new platform or a further development of the existing one, cannot yet be determined with certainty. In any case, according to Polestar, it is a base that has been completely designed with a fully electric drive in mind. In any case, we can therefore expect the Polestar 3 to be quite a bit bigger than the Polestar 2.
Polestar also reports that the 3 will receive advanced autonomous driver assistance systems and that production for the American market will actually take place in the US for the first time, but apart from that, the brand is not letting go. Probably ‘our’ Polestar 3 comes from the factory in China.
Flagship
Polestar designer Max Missoni previously said features from the concept car Polestar Precept will be seen in the design. In particular, the shape of the ‘bonnet’ under the canvas resembles that of the study model. By the way, it doesn’t look like the Polestar 3 will be a one-to-one production version of the Precept, as they are two very different cars. Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath told US news channel CNBC that the 3 will be the new ‘flagship’ for its brand and that the model represents a ‘big milestone’. According to him, the 3 will also show where Polestar will go with its design language in the future.
Production of the Polestar 3 should start in 2022. The brand will release more details at a later stage, presumably later this year. Following the Polestar 3, the new generation Volvo XC90 will also be on the SPA2 platform.
