Polestar gives the electric 5 planned for 2024 a platform made of glued aluminum. That in itself isn’t earth-shattering, but it’s interesting what that means in the bigger picture with regard to Volvo.
Polestar is expected to launch the 5 in 2024, a car the brand itself describes as an electric four-door performance GT. A sporty model, therefore, a car with which Polestar is targeting cars such as the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-tron GT and therefore of a completely different order than the Polestar 2 and the 3 and 4 that will be on the market successively this year and in 2023. come. Polestar is proud to announce that it will give the 5 a model-specific bonded aluminum platform. Interesting, especially when you hear that Polestar promises that the stiffness of the 5 will be comparable to that of “[…] a two-seater sports car or supercar.” More interesting, however, is that Polestar seems to be pushing itself a little further away from Volvo with the 5 in the car pond.
The Volvo 40.2 Concept Concept. You now know the design of the Polestar 2.
Rewind for a moment. Polestar launched its first model in 2019: the Polestar 1. That plug-in hybrid coupé was clearly recognizable as Volvo. In fact, parent company Geely used the design of the Volvo Concept Coupé presented at the 2013 IAA for the model. Also for the Polestar 2, senior management gave a Volvo study model an earthly existence. The Volvo 40.2 Concept (photos 6 to 8) was transformed into the 2 for the Polestar, the 40.1 Concept presented simultaneously with the 40.2 Concept (photos 9 and 10) is now known as the Volvo C40. Polestar has not yet been able to enjoy recognizable own design. That is slowly but surely changing.
Polestar Prescription Concept
Polestar is coming this year with the 3, a fully electric hefty SUV with a sloping roofline and, according to its creators, sporty nature. The smaller Polestar 4 follows a year later. What the 4 will look like is still a question. But you can count on it being topped with a similar design sauce as the Polestar 3 and 5. We already know broadly how they are designed. The Polestar 5 will be the production version of the Precept Concept (photo 4). The Polestar 3 has already been shown in a revealing sticker sheet. What strikes? Both the 3 and the 5 get a design language that you will not find almost identical on a Volvo model. This gives Polestar more of its own identity. With its own glued aluminum base within the Polestar family, the 5 will be the first excess that also takes more distance from Volvo in terms of technology. The 3 and 4 appear to be ‘just’ on a platform that will also be put into use by Volvo and other brands of Geely.
