Pontiac Solstice (2006) – Into the Wild

For decades, Pontiac was an indispensable part of the American car range, but the brand ceased to exist about thirteen years ago. The Pontiac Solstice was the latest achievement. A car that we don’t know very well here in the Netherlands, but we do.

It is a special appearance, such a Pontiac Solstice. Not only because of its lines, but also because it is a rare car in the Netherlands. After all, we are dealing with a car that was never intended for us. Yet it was not unknown: the (almost In the Wild-worthy) Opel GT was the European brother of this sporty two-door from General Motors. In North America, the Solstice also had another brother: the Saturn Sky, which closely resembles the Opel GT. The family was not yet complete, because you also had the obscure Daewoo G2X. Just like the Saturn Sky, it resembled the Opel GT.

The Pontiac Solstice was therefore the only one of the four to have a unique appearance. Fortunately, actually, otherwise the end of Pontiac would have been even more tragic than it already was. At least with the Solstice it ended with a bang. After all, it was an admittedly somewhat remarkably lined but fun car to conclude with. This copy also looks good, with its special green color, silver-gray accents and handsome wheels. Just a bit more expressive than the Solstice with American registration that we had as a guest three years ago in In het Wild.

This copy, spotted by colleague Joost Boers, not only has a Dutch registration, but has only had Dutch owners. At the beginning of 2006 it rolled off the boat brand new and provided with its first and only registration number. Unlike the previously spotted Solstice, this is not a GXP. It is therefore not the strongest version with the 264 hp 2.0 four-cylinder turbo engine in the nose, but the one with the 173 hp atmospheric 2.4 four-cylinder. This makes it mainly a nice smooth cruiser and not so much a sporty party like the GXP. Summer is in full swing, so we understand that this Solstice is now showing itself nicely with the roof open. On to more sunny kilometers!
