In the spirit of the Mission R
With the Mission R, Porsche showed last year how an electric 718 Cayman can become. You guessed it: that wasn’t just any finger exercise. According to the British coach Porsche now confirms that the successor to the 718 will be fully electric.
During the IAA in Munich, Porsche presented us with a special electrically powered racer; the Mission R. You didn’t need too much imagination to recognize a futuristic 718 Cayman in it. We already stated then that it could just be a harbinger of an electric sequel of the 718 and that indeed appears to be the case.
According to coach Porsche states that halfway through this decade, so in about three years, the fully electric 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster will appear on the market. They are enthroned on a new platform, which Audi and Lamborghini will probably also use. As with the Mission R, the battery pack is placed where you would normally find the engine, so right behind the occupants. Not in the bottom, as usual with EVs. According to Porsche’s technical chief executive Michael Steiner, this choice is made to mimic the driving behavior of a mid-engine sports car as much as possible. It also ensures that you are still quite close to the asphalt and that of course also benefits the sporty feeling.
Porsche is not yet commenting on possible specifications, but those of the Mission R are in any case downright impressive. It has two electric motors (one on the front axle and one on the rear axle) that together produce up to 1,100 horsepower. The battery is also highly regarded. The roughly 80 kWh package can be pumped full with electricity with a charging capacity of 340 kW. The electric 718 Cayman and 718 Boxter will undoubtedly become less powerful, but who knows, such a load capacity may still be maintained. After all, Porsche still has some time. You can bet that the new 718 will look quite similar to the Mission R in appearance and with that it will be (especially in front) clearly a smaller brother of the Taycan.
As mentioned, the new base may also be used by Audi and Lamborghini, logically for (spiritual) successors of the R8 and Huracán. The Audi R8 is already known for a fully electric successor.
