On to 30 different 911s
Porsche CEO Oliver Blume says in an interview with the British Car Magazine that the number of variants of the Porsche 911 is increasing even further. There are already more than 25 flavors to choose from, but there will be more to come. Among other things, more off-road versions in the spirit of the recently unveiled 911 Dakar should expand the range in the run-up to the 60th anniversary of the iconic sports car.
As a customer for a Porsche 911 you have always had a lot to choose from, but the German brand is adding more and more choice with each new generation of the model. Of the current iteration, codename 992, there are currently 26 variants in the price lists. The latest of these is the Porsche 911 Dakar, one that did not exist in previous generations. The Dakar is a raised (and limited edition) 911 with all kinds of adjustments to make the car more off-road and adventure-proof.
In that spirit, there should be more 911 variants in the near future, says Porsche CEO Oliver Blume in an interview with Car Magazine. According to him, it remains to be seen how successful the 911 Dakar will be, but the brand is already thinking about a ‘third pillar’ with 911 versions in addition to the ‘regular’ variants – think of convertible, Turbo, Carrera S and Carrera T. the first column consists of GT products such as the GT3 RS, the second of ‘heritage models’ in celebration of Porsche’s past. Examples are the Porsche 911 Sport Classic and 911 Targa 4S Heritage Edition. The third would therefore consist of 911s with a less strong focus on performance on the tarmac.
More than 30 variants?
You can bet that there will not only be more off-road models, but also more heritage models. Next year, the brand will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the 911, to which it will undoubtedly dedicate a variant. After all, there was also a 50 Jahre edition of the 991 generation 911. In addition, 2023 could well be the year in which Porsche presents the 992.2 generation – or the facelift – to the world. Its market introduction may be accompanied by the debut of an electrified 911, further broadening the line-up. Unless it replaces existing variants, of course.
In the long term, the 911 in 992.2 form is also expected to become a GT2 RS, as well as an extra limited 911 Touring-like according to the court of the 911 R. Conclusion: don’t be surprised if at least thirty (!) different 911s in the Porsche folder. Are you already getting spoiled for choice?
