Powerhouse: this is the Ford Transit 5-ton

Ford is adding a new flagship to the Transit range, the 5-ton. As the name implies, it can be loaded up to a total weight of five tons.

Ford has good news for the big handymen, contractors, gardeners and the like. The Transit can now carry more. The 5-tonne Transit, which is available as a closed and open version, can be packed up to a total weight of 5,000 kg. That is 300 kilos more gross than before. For the closed version, this comes down to a maximum net payload of 2,347 kilos, the version with open loading platform can even carry up to 2,558 kilos.

The 5-tonne Transit has a specially designed 170 hp and 420 Nm strong 2.0 EcoBlue diesel engine. This is linked to a ten-speed automatic transmission, with which the heavy unit must get off its place as efficiently as possible. However, a manual six-speed gearbox is also available. The extra robust axles at the front and rear, in combination with wider rear tires, improved rear brakes and – in the closed version – reinforced bodywork make the higher load possible.

The 5-ton comes in various variants. The closed version is available with a single and double cabin. In addition, there is the version with the open chassis behind the cab, on which the ex-factory container can be delivered if desired, but there is also the possibility to set up a different superstructure yourself. To this end, there is the option of having custom work delivered by one of the 165 Ford approved conversion companies in thirteen countries.

If you choose to go for the ex-factory variants, you can choose from the closed version or the variant with the standard loading platform. The closed Transit 5-ton comes in various versions. The L4 Jumbo, shown here, is the most spacious. It has a single cabin, an extra high roof and therefore the most cargo space: 15.1 cubic meters. In that case, the loading floor is large enough for five Euro pallets. Ford informs Techzle that the prices will be announced next month and that production of the 5-ton Transit will start in November.
