Practical consumption Mazda MX-5 NC: it’s about balance

This consumes the Mazda MX-5 1.8 with 126 hp

Mazda MX-5

Anyone who reads the comments in this section has undoubtedly learned that it is ‘not done’ to mention the consumption of ‘nice’ cars. Yet the relatively favorable consumption is one of the factors that made the Mazda MX-5 so popular. After all: fun, without high costs. What can you expect in that area from the third generation MX-5, the NC?

The Mazda MX-5 NC was delivered between 2005 and 2015. Drivers could choose from a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with 126 hp and a 2.0 S-VT with 160 horses and there was even – for the first time in history – a steel folding roof available. In the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor, the version with 1.8 is by far the most popular, so we focus on that. No punishment, because in this compact roadster 126 hp is enough for a good dose of fun.

Consumption MX-5 1.8

A Mazda MX-5 does not easily make you poor, as is evident from the average fuel consumption of 1 in 12.8 (7.8 l/100 km) that ‘our’ drivers achieve in practice. In absolute terms, this is of course not a fantastic value, but we are of course talking about a sports car here. The most economical driver has an MX-5 Roadster Coupé, the variant with a steel folding roof, which scores an average of 1 in 14.9 (6.7 l/100 km). That is even better than the factory specification of 1 in 14.3 (7.0 l/100 km).

That it can also be less economical is proven by the owner of an MX-5 1.8 Executive from 2006, which drives an average of 1 in 11.6 (8.6 l/100 km). What is required for this? In the ‘driving style’ box, the driver always chooses ‘sporty’. Seen in that light, this MX-5 does not have to be ashamed.

In short, the Mazda MX-5 NC also lives up to the model’s reputation. It is a light roadster that you can drive with good fuel consumption. As far as we are concerned, the consumption of such a car is relevant. After all, the same money gives you more kilometers of driving pleasure.
