Practical consumption Opel Ampera: ahead of its time

The Opel Ampera was one of the first plug-in hybrids on the market, with an all-electric driving range of up to 80 kilometers and a 1.4-liter petrol engine that mainly serves as a range extender. When used properly, this engine should be virtually idle. Does this also apply in practice? The AutoWeek Consumption Monitor provides insight.

We start with a disclaimer. For the sake of completeness, in addition to gasoline consumption, you would also like to read about power consumption in this article. Now it is true that none of the Ampera drivers have kept track of this in the Consumption Monitor, in which we cannot even blame them. Entering a fuel receipt once in a while is manageable, but recording a daily charging session does cause a lot of hassle.

Gasoline consumption Opel Ampera

So we really look at fuel consumption, and that works out favorably for the Ampera. The fourteen drivers record an average of 1 in 42.9 (2.3 l/100 km). While we prefer to draw our conclusions in this section after users have traveled a longer period and a greater distance, this again presents a challenge with the Ampera. For example, the most economical Ampera driver drove 8,000 kilometers in just over a year, while the fuel nozzle was only touched three times. This results in an average consumption of 1 in 318.1 (0.31 l/100 km).

The second most economical driver achieved 1:77.1 (1.3 l/100 km) over a distance of 40,006 kilometers, also in just over a year. In this case, refueling was only done 17 times. The least economical Ampera driver, on the other hand, drove 1:18.5 (5.4 l/100 km) over a distance of 6,755 kilometers. He also indicated that he was unlucky enough to encounter a defective charging station. This Ampera also plugged in neatly.

In fact, the Opel Ampera, like almost every other plug-in hybrid, can be very economical with fuel if the car suits your use. If you take into account that the Opel Ampera turned twelve this year and the plug-in hybrid is only now really commonplace, we can conclude: this model was ahead of its time.
