With iOS 12 officially unveiled, many iPhone users can’t wait to install the update. Fortunately, the public beta could be released any time. By already going through the steps in this tip, you will soon (and safely) start installing.
iOS 12 beta preparations: you can do this now
When Apple soon makes the public beta of iOS 12 available, you naturally want to get started with all the new features as soon as possible. So be sensible and go through the three steps below, so that you can be the first to start the test version.

1. Check if your iPhone or iPad supports iOS 12
Before you prepare yourself for this beta, it is a good idea to check whether your iPhone or iPad supports iOS 12. This is of course mandatory to run the update. If you also tested iOS 11 in this way last year, we have good news: all devices that run on iOS 11 also work with iOS 12.
This means that you can use the test version with the following iPhones, iPads and iPod touch:
iPhone
- iPhone 5S
- iPhone SE
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
- iPhone 6S
- iPhone 6S Plus
- iPhone 7
- iPhone 7 Plus
- iPhone 8
- iPhone 8 Plus
- iPhone X
iPad
- iPad mini 2
- iPad mini 3
- iPad mini 4
- iPad 2017
- iPad Air
- iPad Air 2
- iPad Pro 9.7 inch
- iPad Pro 10.5 inches
- iPad Pro 12.9 inches (1st and 2nd generation)
iPod touch
- iPod touch (sixth generation)
2. Create a beta account in advance
To use the trial version, you need a special beta account. You can create this now, which is done in a few minutes. It goes like this.
- Go to the beta website of Apple;
- Log in with your Apple ID and password;
- Click on ‘iOS’;
- Choose the device you want to install the beta on.

3. Make a backup of your device
The most important thing is that you make a backup of your device now. While the iOS 12 beta is a nice way to get started with all the new features months before release, it is primarily a trial version. That means you get more freezes, the battery life decreases and your iPhone can also crash.
Apple therefore always emphasizes that you should not install a beta on your primary device. In addition to serious crash bugs, there are also minor errors that cause some apps to stop working or not work properly. Keep this in mind if you install the beta on the iPhone that you use intensively every day.
Therefore, always make a backup first, so that you can restore your data without any problems and go back to iOS 11. You can read all about making an iPhone backup in our guide below.

When will the iOS 12 public beta be released?
An exact date is unknown, but during WWDC Apple promised that the first public beta would be released in June. That would mean that the test version could be released at any time. If we look at previous years, Apple almost always releases these updates around 7 p.m. Dutch time.
So keep an eye on iPhone to be the first to know when the beta can be downloaded. This can be done via our website, but also with the free iPhoned app.
