It was the most consequential union that ever existed on this planet. About 1.7 billion years ago, several primordial microbes merged into a far larger and more complex cell type: the eukaryotic cell. All higher life emerged from it. Without this event there would be no plants, no animals, no fungi. And probably no life on land either. Because in a second decisive event, fungi and algae, which had allied themselves and which under the label "lichen" conquered foreign territory...
