Price difference Euro 98 and Euro 95 increasing

Extra disadvantage for those who have an older car

Price difference Euro 98 and Euro 95 increasing

Euro 98 (E5) is more expensive at the pump than Euro 95 (E10), but the price difference between the two types of petrol is increasing. That is certainly bad news for those who fill up with Euro 98 because the engine in their car cannot handle Euro 95.

According to experts, the fact that Euro 98 (E5) is becoming more and more expensive than Euro 95 (E10) is because oil refineries in Europe and the United States are struggling to find sufficient suitable raw materials to make the high-quality petrol. Consulting firm Energy Aspects tells ANP that the energy crisis caused by the invasion of Ukraine by Russia is the basis for this. There’s no more Russian crude coming in. Stricter American environmental regulations and a too small refining capacity would also play a role.

According to consumer collective United Consumers, the Average National Recommended Price (GLA) of a liter of Euro 98 (E10) is now €2.09. The GLA of a liter of Euro 95 (E10) is €1.93 at the time of writing. The difference between the GLA of Euro 95 and Euro 98 is therefore €0.16 per litre. A few years ago, the prices of these fuels were closer together. Please note: it is very possible that you will find local filling stations where you pay less than the liter prices mentioned in this article. The GLA often only applies to main points along the highway.

Paul van Sems of United Consumers tells ANP that Euro 98 is more expensive because it is sold relatively less because owners of “classic cars” generally drive fewer kilometers. In practice, not only owners of classic cars fill up with Euro 98. In general, as a rule of thumb, cars from 2000 or older are better off hunting for E5, because E10 may cause damage to hoses and seals. Ethanol dissolves plasticizers in rubber, making it too hard and porous. In more modern cars, other rubbers are used that may or may not be more resistant to ethanol. On the website www.e10check.nl you can check whether your car can handle E10. If you really want certainty, it is even better to inquire yourself at his or her garage.
