The price of batteries for electric cars has fallen by as much as 87 percent since 2008, the US Department of Energy calculated.
It was of course already known that the price of the batteries decreases as the EV plays a greater role. However, it is always nice to be able to attach a concrete figure to your claims and that is now possible thanks to the Department of Energy (DOE). The US Department states that in 2008 car batteries still cost $1,237 (€1,070) per kWh, taking inflation into account. Now, in 2021, EV batteries will cost just $157 (€136) per kWh.
This means that the price of car batteries has fallen by as much as 87 percent in 13 years. The prices are based on the usable capacity and are therefore slightly lower if the stated gross capacity is the starting point. The DOE also emphasizes that the exact prices can never be precisely determined and thus the calculation is by definition based on estimates.
