Private sales of electric cars are growing fast

In the first three quarters of this year, no less than 18.3 percent more new electric cars were registered than in the same period last year. This is evident from figures released by industry organization Bovag.

A total of 6,140 new EVs were registered in September, 872 of which by private buyers. This brings the total number of new electric cars registered this year to 28,782 units, some 1,000 less than in the same period last year (29,810 units). However, it is striking that more than a third of the EVs registered this year have been registered in the name of a private individual. Last year, according to Bovag and RDC, that percentage was currently 20 percent.

Private purchase of EV

In the third quarter of this year, from July to September, 2,585 electric cars were registered in the Netherlands in the name of private individuals. That is no less than 79 percent more than were registered in the same quarter last year (1,440 units). This brings the number of EVs registered in the Netherlands between January and September in the name of a private person to 4,419 units. That number is 18.3 percent above that of the same period last year. This sharp increase is partly related to the € 4,000 subsidy that could be applied for by private individuals on 1 July for the purchase of a new EV. If we look purely at the electric cars sold to private individuals in the first three quarters of this year, the MG ZS turns out to be the absolute number one with 773 units sold. The British / Chinese crossover accounts for nearly 18 percent of total private EV sales. The Renault Zoe follows in second place with 586 units, followed by the Tesla Model 3 which takes third place with 422 units. The Model 3 has thus dropped nicely in rank. In the first three quarters of last year, more than 2,000 Tesla Model 3s were purchased by private buyers. The top five is closed by the Hyundai Kona Electric (380 units) and the Kia Niro (310 units).

Private lease

There is a huge increase in the number of private lease contracts for electric cars. In the first nine months of this year, more than 6,000 contracts were concluded for an EV, according to industry association Bovag. This is also related to the aforementioned subsidy of € 4,000 that was introduced in July, which after all also applied to private lease constructions, although the amount was spread over the term of the contract. The Volkswagen e-Golf was the most popular EV in private lease land with 2,027 contracts concluded. Places 2 to 5 are filled in succession by the Nissan Leaf (730 units), the Skoda Citigo iV (695), the Kia e-Niro (648) and the MG ZS (612).

Top 10

If we combine the EVs purchased by private individuals with the number of private lease contracts linked to electric cars, the Volkswagen e-Golf appears to be the most popular EV with 2,196 registered copies in the first nine months of this year. The top 10 is as follows:
