Properly securing a smartphone is important. Nobody wants photos and other data suddenly out on the street. Therefore, secure the iPhone so that others cannot access it.

Lost phone? Make sure in advance that no one can just look into the smartphone. For example, put a digital lock on it. This can be done in different ways: with an access code, a fingerprint and facial recognition.

It is recommended to install new updates. These often have improvements and bug fixes that make the device more secure.

  • Tap on Institutions > General > software update.
  • Tap on Download and install.

The apps on the phone also have an update once in a while. The makers then launch a new version with improvements. Therefore, update the apps regularly. Automatically, or manually. Read how to do this in the tip ‘Update apps on iPad/iPhone’.

Make sure the phone goes to sleep automatically after use. Someone else has to unlock the phone first before they can get in. The phone is then in a power-saving mode. Choose after how many minutes this happens.

  • Tap on Institutions > Screen and brightness > Automatic lock.
  • Choose after how many minutes you put the device to sleep.

Don’t be afraid of malicious software. Why? Apple closely monitors programs that make it to the App Store. This means that all apps have been extensively checked by Apple. Therefore, an antivirus for the iPhone is not necessary.

Unfortunately, there is no protection against spam and phishing. So use your common sense. So do not tap on suspicious links and never pass on privacy-sensitive information (such as your PIN code).

Usually you have a secure internet connection via WiFi. This means that surfing is only possible via WiFi after a password has been entered. No password means no access to this network. Great, because with a secure network you can simply do internet banking. But sometimes you also surf unsecured internet connections. Think of WiFi networks without a password or in a restaurant where all visitors know the password. These pose a risk: others can watch without you noticing. That is no problem for those who only surf to Seniorweb.nl or Nu.nl. But on such a public, unsecured network, it is not safe to do internet banking or carry out other privacy-sensitive things.
