Purchase subsidy EVs 2022: everything you need to know

We all need to get electric cars as soon as possible. At least, that seems to be the message of the Dutch government more and more. A subsidy budget is also available for 2022 to make the purchase of an electric car more attractive. With these new electric cars you will be eligible for the Subsidy for Electric Passenger Cars for Private Individuals (SEPP). A real purchase subsidy. But be quick!

The subsidy pot for the purchase or private lease of a new electric car was empty in no time last year. A new and larger subsidy budget for the purchase of new and used electric cars will be available on 3 January, although the Electric Passenger Cars Private Car Subsidy (SEPP) in 2022 will be lower than this year. Where you received this – if you were there in time – when purchasing a new electric car with a catalog value of at least €12,000 and a maximum of €45,000, the purchase subsidy in 2022 will be €3,350. By reducing the amount, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management hopes that more people will be able to benefit from the purchase subsidy.

As mentioned, you are not always eligible for the purchase subsidy. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management sets various conditions, both for the car and for the agreement and the subsidy application.

Conditions car

The subsidy pot for 2022 is filled with an amount of approximately €71 million. Significantly more than the €14.4 million available for 2021. That amount is for both new and leased electric cars. To be eligible for the SEPP subsidy when purchasing a new car, the electric car must meet the following conditions:

  • The electric range is at least 120 kilometers
  • The list price is not lower than €12,000 and not higher than €45,000.
  • The electric car will not be registered in the name of the intended owner before January 1, 2022

Agreement and subsidy application conditions

  • You must have a written purchase agreement for the purchase of the electric car
  • Both the vehicle registration and the purchase agreement are in the name of the subsidy applicant
  • The purchase agreement is concluded on after January 1, 2022
  • The subsidy application was submitted within 60 days of signing the purchase agreement
  • The subsidy applicant has a valid residential address in the Netherlands.

How do I apply for SEPP subsidy?

On January 3, the government will turn the cap on the new subsidy pot at 9 am. Although a larger budget is available in 2022 than last year and the purchase subsidy is lower, it is wise to act quickly. That is why it is important to know how and where to apply for the subsidy. about you submit an application access via DigiD is required. So make sure you have these things available and in order. The SEPP subsidy can be applied for immediately after the purchase agreement has been concluded. Please note that the EV purchased – both new and used – must be in the applicant’s name for a minimum of 3 consecutive years.

Purchase subsidy used electric car

The subsidy pot for 2022 is filled with an amount of approximately €20.4 million. That amount is for both the purchase and lease of a used electric passenger car. To be eligible for the SEPP subsidy of €2,000 for the purchase of a used electric car, similar conditions apply as for the purchase of a new electric car. Some important aspects to keep in mind:

  • A written purchase agreement in the name of the applicant is also required for the purchase of a used electric car.
  • The electric car has an electric range of at least 120 kilometers
  • The original list price of the car was a minimum of €12,000 and a maximum of €45,000.
  • The second-hand electric car has not previously been registered in the name of a subsidy applicant or of someone who has lived at the same address.

Future

After 2022, the purchase subsidy will decrease annually. In 2023 the amount will be €2,950 and from 2024 the purchase subsidy will be €2,550. Initially, €3,350 in 2023 and €2,950 in 2024 in purchase subsidy on a new EV. At the end of 2024, the incentive scheme will be finished, while a subsidy of €2,550 was originally planned for 2025. The purchase subsidy for used electric cars will remain at €2,000 until 2024. This incentive scheme will stop with effect from 2025.
