Quarter gets behind the wheel again an hour after smoking pot

Nearly a quarter of cannabis users (22 percent) got behind the wheel within an hour of smoking cannabis last year. This is evident from a study by Team Alert on behalf of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.

The survey conducted at the end of last year among more than 2,100 cannabis users over the age of 18 also showed that 46 percent had driven a car within eight hours of using cannabis. It is prohibited to drive under the influence of drugs. According to the researchers, it is mainly frequent users who drive quickly. They are often men and people without children.

It is often done deliberately because the chance of being caught is considered small. “More than half of participants knew while using that they would be driving later,” the study said. “I find it shocking that this research shows that many cannabis drivers simply go out, even though they know very well that it is prohibited,” says Minister Mark Harbers (Infrastructure).
