Former Formula 1 driver Stirling Moss passed away on Sunday. The Briton was ninety years old. Moss had been ill for a long time. Due to his fragile health, he has not appeared in public since 2018.
Moss drove in Formula 1 between 1951 and 1961. He came second in the World Cup four times in a row and is often considered the best driver who never became world champion. In addition to Formula 1, Moss drove in countless other racing classes. The Englishman won 212 of the 529 races he participated in. He had to end his career in 1962, when he was in a coma for a month after a major crash on the British track Goodwood. As a result of the accident, he was partially paralyzed for six months.
Moss died on Easter Sunday at his London home, with his wife Susie at his side. She took care of him daily in the last years of his life. “He died the way he lived: he looked beautiful,” she says Daily Mail. “He was tired, closed his beautiful eyes and that was it.”
Formula 1 teams are saddened by the death of Moss, who drove in the royal class for Lotus, Maserati and Mercedes, among others. “Today, the sports world has lost not only a real icon and a legend, but also a gentleman. Mercedes has lost a dear friend. Mister Stirling, we will miss you,” Mercedes writes. “Everyone at McLaren mourns the passing of a legend in our sport: Sir Stirling Moss. A wonderful driver who was extremely talented and a perfect gentleman. He left an indelible mark in the history of international motorsport. Our condolences to the family, “writes McLaren.
