iOS 27 Find My adds custom location sharing and Hide Location feature

The Find My app has a number of useful innovations in iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate that make location sharing much more flexible. You can now decide how long you share your location with others, from one hour to a maximum of 30 days, or choose a custom date and time.
In addition, Apple is introducing a new ‘Hide Location’ option, which allows you to temporarily pause your location for individuals without them being notified. In addition, Apple has optimized the Find My app for the Apple Watch so that from watchOS 27 you have one app instead of three separate applications.

Find My App: Interface adjusted

The Find My app has been given a refreshed interface that should make it easier to use. When you tap a person, object, or device, it no longer immediately takes up a large portion of the screen, leaving the rest of your list more visible.

This allows you to perform actions more quickly, such as playing a sound, calculating a route or viewing location data, without having to dive deep into a detail window every time.

iOS 27 Find My adds custom location sharing and Hide Location feature

Would you like to view more details? Then follow the steps below:

  • Open the Find My app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac
  • Navigate to the person, device or object you want to view
  • Tap or click the three dots next to the name

You can then view information or enable options such as lost mode, manage notifications or wipe devices. Attention to sharing and rights has also increased, so that you can see at a glance who your location is being shared with.

Decide for how long you share your location

The biggest innovation is that in Find My you can now determine much more precisely how long you share your location. In addition to the existing options such as one hour, today and always, Apple is adding a custom duration that allows you to choose a period from a minimum of 15 minutes to a maximum of 30 days.

You can not only set a number of days, hours and minutes, but also choose a specific end time. This makes the function more practical for an appointment, a trip or a situation in which you want to be less visible temporarily.

  • Open the Find My app
  • Navigate to the ‘People’ tab
  • Tap the plus button
  • Choose ‘Share my location’
  • Select the desired persons
  • Confirm with the check mark
  • Choose ‘Custom’

You can then set a timer or a specific end time so that sharing your location stops at exactly the right time. It is good to know that you can set a minimum of 15 minutes to a maximum of 30 days.

Hide my location

The new option Hide my location Find My allows you to temporarily pause your location for specific people without them being notified. For these people, it will then appear that no location can be found, while your location remains hidden until the end of the day.

  • Open the Find My app
  • Navigate to the ‘People’ tab
  • Select the person you want to hide your location from
  • Tap or click the three dots next to the name
  • Choose ‘Hide my location’

This function is especially useful for situations in which you do not want to be visible, for example during a surprise, an appointment or just for some extra privacy. By default, your location is hidden until the end of the day, but you can also choose to show your location again using the same steps.

One app on Apple Watch

Perhaps the most changes are on the Apple Watch. Apple combines the separate apps Find People, Find Devices and Find Objects in watchOS 27 into one central Find My app, just like on iPhone and iPad.

The app opens by default in the last used tab and lets you switch between People, Devices, Objects and Me via the icon at the top left. In each tab you can filter, sort by alphabet or distance, and immediately see where friends, devices or AirTags are located.

That makes the Watch version much more consistent and faster to use, especially for quick actions from your wrist. You can immediately start a route from the map, play a sound or zoom in on a specific person or object, which finally makes the app really feel like a full-fledged mini version of Find My.
