Real-world fuel consumption Mazda CX-5: A closer look at traditional technology

How much less economical is an SUV coach compared to the Mazda 6?

Real-world fuel consumption Mazda CX-5: A closer look at traditional technology

The Mazda CX-5 is a popular SUV in the C-segment. The second generation, which we will discuss in this article, appeared on the market in 2017. This ‘new’ CX-5 also applies: no downsizing, under the hood is – in most cases – just a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 165 hp. How does that affect consumption?

Earlier we looked at the practical consumption of the Mazda 6, where this traditional engine technology is combined with equally traditional body shapes. Drivers scored an average consumption of 1 in 14.6 (6.9 l/100 km) with this car. With an SUV carriage, that must be higher, right?

We calculate the average consumption based on 24 cars, the owners of which have entered the fuel receipts in the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor. The average consumption of all these CX-5s together is exactly 1 in 13 (7.7 l/100 km). The most positive outlier is 1 in 14.9 (6.7 l/100 km), a somewhat longer measurement shows an equally neat 1 in 14.6 (6.8 l/100 km).

The least economical Mazda CX-5 SkyActiv-G 165 consumed an average of 1 in 11.5 (8.7 l/100 km). We should also note that the owner of this car, who registered consumption for more than 20,000 kilometers, traveled very often with the caravan. That does the average consumption of course no good. The second most inefficient driver kept track of consumption for less time, but indicated that he drove in a ‘sporty’ manner. This results in a consumption of 1 to 11.8 (8.5 l/100 km).

How the ‘traditional’ Mazda compares to competitors with smaller turbo engines? The Peugeot 3008 and Opel Grandland do slightly better, while the Mazda in turn scores at the expense of the Ford Kuga. In practice, Mazda’s philosophy seems to work very well, although the higher body produces a clear increase in consumption compared to the lower and more streamlined Mazda 6.
