Recall for Volvo S60 and S80: not for the Netherlands

Volvo is launching a major recall for the first generation S60 and S80. Dutch owners of such S60s and S80s have nothing to fear, as the recall does not affect cars delivered in the Netherlands.

Volvo is recalling hundreds of thousands of Volvo S60 and S80 of the first generation worldwide. According to the American safety institute NHTSA, the inflation mechanism of the driver’s airbag in those models could potentially cause a life-threatening situation after years of exposure to high temperatures and high humidity. The mechanism could explode, resulting in the release of sharp metal parts at high speed.

Volvo’s S80 from model years 2001 to 2006 and S60 from model years 2001 to 2009 are said to be affected by the recall. Dutch S60 and S80 drivers can continue to drive with peace of mind. Inquiries with the Dutch importer show that the recall does not relate to models delivered in the Netherlands.

A few years ago, the Japanese auto parts maker Takata became discredited for supplying millions of airbags with potentially a similar problem for years, resulting in 16 fatalities. No parts from Takata are involved in Volvo’s recall. Documents from NHTSA show that the inflation mechanism comes from the German ZF Friedrichshafen and that Autoliv is the supplier of the explosive bags.
