Recall M 1000 XR and M 1000 R: Steering damper can ‘block’

BMW has rolled out a recall for the 2024-2025 m 1000 XR and M 1000 R. In the steering damper, the pin of the valve valve can come off the housing, so that unexpectedly much more power is suddenly needed to steer.

Recall M 1000 XR and M 1000 R: Steering damper can ‘block’

On February 18, BMW MotorRad was informed about a steering damper who probably “blocked” the steering at low speed, so that the rider had fallen. Not much later, BMW Motorrad received another two reports, but they had not led to an accident. All reports involved the M 1000 XR.

X -ray examination of the steering damper showed that in all three cases the pin of the valve valve in the housing had shifted relative to the original position. This suggested that the screw connection was not carried out in accordance with specifications.

A test program was started to investigate the effect of a separate pin on the steering behavior of the engine. BMW learned that research that a completely loose pin did not block the steering damper, but that steering was heavier. Sending this heavier was significantly noticeable at speeds below 30 km/h.

The three reported steering dampers appeared to have been produced at the supplier in three consecutive days. Further analysis of the production process indicated deviations between 26 August 2024 and 2 October 2024. During that period, steering dampers also appeared to have been produced for the M 1000 R.

On March 20, 2025, BMW Motorrad decided to roll out a recall for the M 1000 XR, a week later that list was expanded with even more M 1000 XR models, as well as the M 1000 R. At the BMW dealer the steering damp will be replaced by a new one.
