Record-fast electric ‘fan car’ goes into production

Less than a year ago, the relatively unknown McMurtry Automotive caused a sensation by clocking a new record time on the hill climb with the bloody fast Spéirling. Die Spéirling is now getting a sequel.

Only about 39 seconds, that’s what the McMurtry Spéirling needed last year during the Goodwood Festival of Speed to complete the famous hill climb there. The video images almost looked manipulated, the Spéirling crossed the course so incredibly fast. The electric racer owes this not only to its two electric motors on the rear axle, but also to its relatively low weight (less than 1,000 kilos) and the special way in which it sticks to the asphalt. Because it is one fan car, so he sucks himself on the road by means of fans. This way of gaining traction is inspired by what the Brabham F1 team did with the BT46B in 1978 and should ensure that the McMurtry Spéirling already experiences 2,000 kg of downforce when standing still.

A special thing, that Spéirling, but last year it was still a prototype. Now McMurtry Automotive announces that there will be a (not street legal) production version. We’re getting to see it now, making its public debut at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed (July 13-16). The Spéirling Pure, as it is called, will probably also take a shot at the prototype record. We are curious if it can be done even faster. In any case, the specifications of the electric fan car are already promising. The Spéirling Pure, which is only 3.45 m long, 1.58 m wide and 1.02 m high, weighs less than 1,000 kg, unleashes 1,013 hp on the rear wheels and reaches a top speed of 305 km/h. Also not unimportant: the 60 kWh battery pack can be fully charged in ‘less than 20 minutes’.

McMurtry Speirling

The McMurtry Speirling can best be described as a shrunken LMP1 car.

Anyone who wants to experience for themselves how a car that ‘easily pulls 3G in bends’ must look at someone very sweetly or be particularly wealthy. The McMurtry Spéirling Pure will cost at least €955,000. Production will start in 2024 and only 100 will be produced.
