Renault 5 Prototype: R5 returns!

Earlier this morning, Groupe Renault announced its plans for the future, which included the announcement of a whole series of new models. Now Renault itself shows a very interesting concept car. The brand is bringing back the Renault 5 and this Renault 5 Prototype gives a good indication of what the brand is planning.

Renault will start a huge model offensive in the coming years. The brand will be launching no fewer than seven new C / D segmenters in Europe by 2025, with a huge focus on electrified and fully electric transport. The fact that in addition to new C and D segmenters there are also more details in the barrel, is evident from the concept car that Renault is now releasing. This Renault 5 Prototype is a preview of an electric newcomer with which Renault translates the old 5 / Supercinq into the present. Renault shows both a three-door and a five-door version.

Earlier this week, rumors surfaced that Renault would like to revive iconic models from the past. Very concrete evidence of this is now being provided. This is the Renault 5 Prototype, a concrete preview of a fully electric hatchback that should revive the 5. “The soul of the brand is in its roots,” said Renault. The brand describes the Renault 5 Prototype as an electric city car.

Although the Renault 5 Prototype is clearly a new model, it is laced with references to its predecessors. For example, the tailgate that has been incorporated into the hood is a nod to the air intake of yesteryear. The angular headlights and the vertically oriented rear lights together with the slightly sloping buttocks are all references to the Renaultjes 5 that could be found on every street corner years ago. The LED daytime running lights are located in the bumper and, with its angular shape, are somewhat reminiscent of the optional spotlights of the original. Renault adepts will probably also get soft knees from the retro-R5 logo on the back of the Renault 5 Prototype. It is striking that Renault has opted for textile for the finish of the roof. A piece of quirky French design.

Renault does not say when there will be a production version of the Renault 5 Prototype, but this concept car is in any case a clear signal that Renault has certainly not forgotten its rich model history.

Future

Renault will launch fourteen new models up to and including 2025, of which no fewer than seven are in the C and D segment. Seven of the fourteen newcomers are also completely electric. Renault must become a ‘tech brand’ with a great focus on new technology. The factory in Flins (France) will also be engaged in overhauling used Renaults. Old commercial vehicles with a diesel engine must be able to be converted. The old buyers will receive either a fully electric powertrain or a machine that can handle biogas. The reuse of old products should become an additional source of income for Renault.

In the EV field, Renault is introducing two new modular platforms: CMF-B EV and the previously introduced CMF-EV platform. The number of electrified Renaults in the range should double in the coming years. The aforementioned focus on the C segment is striking. In addition, the brand is aiming that 35 percent of its sales will consist of hybrids and plug-in hybrids and that 30 percent will be fully electric. Renault will also pay more attention to fuel cell technology, for example by entering into a joint venture.
