Volkswagen on a Twingo basis?

There were previously rumors that Renault has aroused Volkswagen’s interest with its upcoming electric Twingo. Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo now confirms that there are indeed talks.
Shortly after the unveiling of the concept version of the new Renault Twingo, the German version arrived Handelsblatt on the track that Volkswagen would be interested in its basis. The Germans may want to use this for their entry-level EV, which may be called ID1. Luca de Meo, CEO of the Renault Group, explains Autonews that there are indeed ‘good discussions’ about this with Volkswagen. He also immediately indicates that he is open to more collaborations.
In conversation with AutoWeek, among others, Renault CEO Fabrice Cambolive also emphasized this. According to him, it does not only have to concern the A-segment: “We are ready for cooperation in all segments. The question is of course in what capacity we do it and what the opportunities are if we join forces, but we are of course open to it.”
What may appeal to Volkswagen is that Renault can work quickly. It also wants to shorten the development time of new cars, Renault is already succeeding in this. Cambolive explains to us: “We work much faster than before. The decision to build the Renault 5 was made at the beginning of 2021 and it will be launched in the second half of this year, so that took three and a half years. Our goal (with the Twingo; ed.) is to do it even faster, within three years.” According to Cambolive, the decision about the Twingo was made no more than six months ago, so the Twingo will probably come onto the market in mid-2026.
