Major role for synthetic fuels

As of 2035, sales of new cars with traditional combustion engines that emit CO2 are almost over in Europe. Will it soon be over and done with for the combustion engine? Renault thinks not. Not according to a senior Renault official. “The internal combustion engine will be around for at least 70 years, whether we like it or not.”
Jean-Dominique Senard, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Groupe Renault, says to the French La Tribune. Although Senard emphasizes again that Renault will only sell new electric passenger cars in Europe by 2030, he believes that the combustion engine still has a long future ahead. “[…] We also keep cars with combustion engines. I think the internal combustion engine will be around the world for at least another 70 years,” said Senard.
According to the top executive of Renault, the price of CO2-neutral fuels will fall to €1 to €1.50 per liter in the long term, according to independent experts.[…] perhaps in four, five or six years’ time.” European regulations prescribe that from 2035 no more cars that emit CO2 may be sold in the European Union, but there is still a further requirement for combustion engines that run on CO2-neutral alternative fuels. Jean-Dominique Senard says there are still enough challenges to realize the transition to fully electric and mentions, among other things, the availability – and the origin – of precious metals and minerals needed for battery packs. “I am not convinced that we have foreseen possible geopolitical crises. In fact, I think we have not foreseen them at all,” says Jean-Dominique Senard in La Tribune. The wars of the future are wars for resources. “
