Unlike the Kadjar it replaces, the Renault Austral is currently only a five-seater. Families with more than two children will no longer have to ignore the Renault Austral, because a version with seven seats also seems to be on the way.

Renault’s previous SUV in the segment of cars like the Nissan Qashqai and Peugeot 3008 was available as a five- and seven-seater. In both cases, the Renault Kadjar was 4.45 meters long. The aforementioned SUV-types from Nissan and Peugeot also always have five seats, although those brands in the form of the X-Trail and 5008 also offer technically related alternatives with seven seats. Kadjar successor Renault Austral currently only exists as a five-seater, but it also seems to have a more spacious alternative with seven seats.

The Renault Austral as a well-known five-seater.

These photos show a packed test sample of a Renault Austral that is a size larger than the already known model. With that, Renault seems to be taking a different path than it did with the Kadjar, as the seven-seater version was just as big as the five-seater. Particularly behind the rear doors, the snapped model is larger than the five-seat Austral, although the wheelbase also seems to have increased.

The big seven-seat snatched Austral.

We still have to guess at the name of the larger Renault Austral with seven seats. It is not inconceivable that the French give the car the ‘Grand’ prefix, as they did with the larger versions of cars such as the Scénic and Espace. In addition, it is also possible that Renault adds ‘Espace’ to the model name, although there is no hard evidence for this yet. Whatever name the larger Austral gets, technically it is simply related to the already familiar five-seat version. So count on a range of mild-hybrid powertrains. We expect Renault to pull the curtain on the ‘Grand Austral’ in the second half of 2023.
