Renault’s new SUV is called Austral

Renault is working hard behind the scenes on a successor to the Kadjar. That new SUV will make its appearance next year and now we also know that Renault is putting the name Austral on it.

At six years old, the Renault Kadjar is no longer the youngest and so its successor is approaching fast. Last month it was already spotted in the Netherlands by AutoWeek reader Lou Kamm, albeit with a good layer of camouflage material over it. Renault’s counterpart to the Nissan Qashqai is now revealing some more secrets. His name is Australia.

The name Austral is, as you may have guessed, a nod to Australia: “Austral evokes the vibrancy and warmth of the southern round. The name invites you to discover what is ideal for an SUV. The word is formed from a harmonious balance of sounds that are easy to pronounce worldwide and which also give it international allure,” said Renault’s head of model naming strategy, Sylvia Dos Santor.

We already get to hear more than just the name of the newcomer. For example, Renault reports that the car is 4.51 meters long. That is roughly 2 centimeters longer than the Kadjar. We do not have to count on a seven-seater configuration: the Austral is always a five-seater. Count on the necessary similarities with the little brother of the Austral, the Mégane E-Tech Electric. Logically, we don’t have to count on a fully electric Austral. For this, Renault is preparing a sister model based on the Mégane E-Tech Electric. The Renault Austral shares its base with the Nissan Qashqai.

In the spring of 2022, Renault will pull the curtain on the Austral.
