And then Europe

‘Renewed Tesla Model Y coming in 2024’

Just as Tesla presented the extensively updated Model 3 in the late summer of 2023, it could well be the turn of the updated Tesla Model Y in the late summer of 2024.

The Tesla Model 3 and the Tesla Model Y share much more than just a platform. The Model Y is the higher brother of the Model 3 in every respect and shares headlights, taillights, fog lights, front hatch and dashboard with the sedan. At least… until last September. Then the Tesla Model 3 received a new front, new rear lights, a higher-quality interior and a revised chassis, with the result that the difference between ‘3’ and ‘Y’ is greater than ever.

That the Model Y will eventually undergo similar changes is certainly not a thought out of the blue. Previous updates that initially applied to one of the two models, such as newly arranged headlights or different door panels, were invariably also implemented for the other model a short time later. The question is therefore not if, but when the Tesla Model Y will get a facelift. Bloomberg news agency says it has the answer: the updated Tesla Model Y should come off the production line in China by the middle of next year. Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai also makes the facelifted Model 3 and both models use the same light units and dashboards. So affordable!

The current Tesla Model Y (top) still has the nose of the ‘old’ Model 3 (bottom). The facelifted Model 3 (at the very bottom) clearly deviates from it.

Although we consider Bloomberg’s news to be entirely plausible, the question remains what this means for Europe. Unlike the Model 3, the Model Y for Europe does not come from China, but from Germany. Since last summer, this applies to all versions. Before we can see a facelifted Model Y in Europe, the factory near Berlin will probably also have to be converted. It has already been proven that Tesla does not shy away from supplying an ‘old’ version in certain parts of the world: the facelifted Model 3 has still not arrived in the US.
