The Volkswagen Golf will receive a facelift in 2024 and with its sleek face and refreshed interior, it will last a few years. Of course, the absolute trendsetter of the Golf range also returns: the Golf R. Today we see the updated top Golf for the first time, as a Hatchback and as a Variant.

For years it has been the Volkswagen Golf R that has held sway in Golf country. The sporty four-wheel drive top version currently produces 320 hp and thus significantly trumps the front-wheel drive Golf GTI. There are even special limited versions of which the 2.0 TSI mobilizes no less than 333 hp. The Volkswagen Golf has been running in its current form since 2019 and looks like it will last for many more years. The successor Golf IX will not arrive before 2028. Next year, Volkswagen will launch a new version of the Golf and that will also have an R flavor. These spy plates prove this, showing the Golf R Hatchback and the Golf R Variant in action on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife.

The VW’s Golf R in these photos betray their R genes not only with their more dynamic-looking bumper work, but also with the four pipes at the bottom of the buttocks, the R badges and the extra powerful-looking brakes with blue brake calipers. In the updated Golf front we see flatter headlight units that taper towards the center of the front.

A thoroughly renewed interior for the facelifted Golf.

A stronger wind of innovation is emerging in the interior. The updated Volkswagen Golf will have a significantly larger infotainment screen that will soon no longer be in the dashboard, but on it. Physical push buttons return to the steering wheel, a relief for those who are not happy with the current touch-sensitive ones. It is not yet known whether the updated Golf R will again produce 320 hp or perhaps immediately deliver the 333 hp that the current special editions of the Golf R generate. More next year!a
