Volkswagen has a bunch of sporty newcomers behind the scenes who all have the R label stuck on them. One of those powerful R versions is the Tiguan R, which has been in the pipeline for quite some time.
Recently, not only the first photos surfaced of the upcoming Golf R, but also of the R version of the Arteon. Mid-last year, the first spy photos surfaced of a sportively dressed version of the Tiguan, an R-like variant that Volkswagen has not yet brought to life. The Tiguan is about to be facelifted and that freshening up seems to coincide with a real R version this year.
A snow-white prototype of the Tiguan R has now been caught at the famous Nürburgring while making the necessary test kilometers. The virtually tack-free test car is made of sturdy-looking alloy, is relatively close to the asphalt and is fitted with a set of sportier-looking bumpers all around. Although the Tiguan R had two twin tailpipes on both sides of its rear on previously released spy plates, this test specimen seems to have to do with only two tailpipes in total. Just count on four copies for the production version. The roll cage visible in this test model is purely for testing purposes.
The Tiguan R will most likely receive the same power source as the Golf R, although it is not yet known which machine this will be. We expect Volkswagen to hang a 300 to 330 hp 2.0 TSI in the muzzle of the SUV. Undoubtedly, that power is distributed to all four wheels via a DSG automatic transmission. More later this year!
