Rental cars in popular holiday countries have become considerably more expensive

If you want to rent a car in a popular holiday destination, you may be shocked by the prices that are asked. It is a lot more expensive this year for various reasons.

It is possible to look more carefully at holidays abroad and many people would therefore like to rent a car at their destination. That already provides some nasty surprises. Rental cars have become considerably more expensive at various popular destinations. AutoBild dived into prices and saw significant price increases in several places compared to last year.

For example, if you want to rent a car on Mallorca, you can easily spend around € 63 per day for a small car. That is a 150 percent increase from last year. In Ibiza you will lose around € 68 per day, a 125 percent increase compared to 2020. On the Spanish mainland it is slightly less expensive, with just under € 40 per day, but that is nicely 166 percent higher than last year. In Greece you now spend roughly € 45 per day, compared to just under € 18 in 2020, which is more than twice the price. In Italy and Portugal, prices have also doubled and in France 50 percent was added. According to AutoBild only in Turkey have prices remained virtually stable.

There are several reasons for this. First of all, the fleet of many rental companies is limited. Due to the uncertainties surrounding the corona crisis, many companies have postponed the expansion of the fleet. At the moment, expansion may be sensible again, but it is actually more complicated because of the chip shortages and the consequent increasing delivery times. Some companies also increase the amount due to insurance. After all, with a limited supply, lessors cannot afford to lose cars.
