There are several solutions for this. If you’re not using a passcode, you can simply connect the device to your Mac to restore it or restore a backup. However, most users do have a passcode. The problem with this is that iTunes asks you to enter this code on your iPhone or iPad before you can restore the device. Obviously this is not possible as it is stuck in recovery mode. In this case, you can restore an iPad or iPhone by following the steps below:

  1. Open iTunes and connect your iPhone to your computer;
  2. Press and hold the lock and home button for three seconds;
  3. Release the buttons and then hold them down again for ten seconds;
  4. Then only press the home button for 15 seconds;
  5. The iTunes logo and a Lightning cable will now appear on the screen;
  6. Follow the instructions in iTunes on your Mac or PC.

By breaking the iPhone or iPad recovery mode in this way, you can operate the device again from iTunes. Then choose to restore the device so that all data is erased, and you can start again with an as good as new iDevice. This can take a lot of time, on average it will take you half an hour to an hour. During that time, keep your iPhone or iPad connected to your Mac. This way you can be sure that the factory reset goes smoothly.
