Restore backup to iPad

Restore backup to iPadBack up the iPad regularly. You can restore it if something goes terribly wrong with the device or if you get a new iPad.

In this article, we’ll discuss how iPadOS 14 and 15 users can restore a previously backed up to an iPad via iCloud. So you must have already set up a backup. Not sure what version of iPadOS is on the tablet? Then read ‘The system on your tablet or smartphone’.

Did something go wrong and do you have to reinstall the iPad from scratch? That works in the following way. This is really an emergency measure, if something has gone terribly wrong with the device. The current content and all settings will be erased.

  • Tap on Institutions > General.
  • Tap on transfer or reset iPad.
  • Tap on Clear all content and settings.
  • Tap on Continue.
  • Tap on Erase anyway.
  • If prompted, enter your Apple ID password.
  • Tap on Turn off.
  • Tap on Erase iPad.
  • Enter your access code if necessary.

The contents and all settings will be erased and the iPad will reboot.

  • Tap on Institutions > General.
  • Tap on Reset.
  • Tap on Clear all content and settings.
  • The iPad may report that not all apps have been backed up. For example, because you have excluded certain apps from the backup. Tap on Continue > Delete now.
  • Enter your access code if necessary.
  • In the next two windows, tap Erase to actually delete the content and settings.
  • Type your Apple ID password and tap Erase.

The contents and all settings will be erased and the iPad will reboot.

To restore a previously backed up to iPad, take the following steps:

  • Turn on the device.
  • Select your language. We tap Dutch.
  • Select your country. We tap The Netherlands.
  • If prompted, enter the SIM card code and tap OK.
  • Tap on Configure manually.
  • Tap your Wi-Fi network and enter the password if necessary.
  • Tap on Connect > Next one.
  • Apple provides information about data usage and privacy. Read this information and tap Continue.
  • Optionally, set Touch ID or Face ID as the passcode on newer devices.
  • Enter an access code and repeat the code.
  • Tap on Restore iCloud Backup.
  • Tap behind ‘Apple ID’ on E-mail and enter your Apple ID.
  • Tap on Next one.
  • Enter your password and tap Next one.
  • You may be given a verification code on another Apple device. Then enter this code.
  • If necessary, read the Terms and Conditions and tap Agree.
  • The iPhone/iPad is being configured. This may take a while. After that you will see a number of backups. If the backup you want to use isn’t listed here, tap Show all backups.
  • Tap the backup you want to restore. This is probably the most recent.
  • Tap on Continue keep iPad up to date.
  • Optionally, set the iCloud Keychain. We don’t do this now and tap Don’t use iCloud Keychain.
  • Apple may ask if you want to add a credit or debit card to Pay. We don’t do this now and tap Configure later in Settings. If you had already added a payment card on a linked device (iPhone), iPadOS 15 will suggest that you also use it on the iPad. We don’t want this and choose Configure later in Settings.
  • Now comes the question of whether you want to share audio recordings with Apple to improve Siri. We don’t and tap Not now.
  • Decide whether Apple can analyze your usage data.
  • The backup is restored. This may take a while. The iPad will then reboot. If prompted, enter the SIM card code and tap OK.
  • Enter your newly set unlock code.

All apps will be downloaded and installed again. This may take a while.
